Coming Soon: Maryland’s Mobile Safety Town

DRIVE SMART Maryland was recently awarded grant funding from the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office to develop a mobile Safety Town. Young children face heightened risks as road users due to their small size, limited visibility, and developing awareness of traffic environments. Without a clear understanding of road rules or the skills to safely navigate streets as pedestrians, these dangers increase significantly. The mobile Safety Town will help build a foundation of safe road use early in life—teaching children essential traffic safety habits that can grow with them and foster a lifetime of responsible behavior on and around the road.

The mobile safety town will aim to introduce young children to some of the fundamentals of traffic safety. The town will consist of an indoor/outdoor floor mat marked with roads, crosswalks, railroad crossings and more, complete with functioning traffic lights and signs to obey. As they navigate the roadways of our town on bikes, trikes and scooters, the children will learn about traffic signs and signals and safe pedestrian behavior.

Being that this is a mobile safety town, we bring it to you! Our safety town will be available for community events, fairs and festivals and preschool installations. We anticipate hitting the road in late winter.
